Tutor: Ric Morte

For many years Ric has been a teacher of Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. He was also head of special needs focusing on the difficulties experienced by underachieving learners.

He has taught children from the age of 9 in Middle School taking them through Maths and Science. In High School he took students through the separate disciplines of Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology up to A level.

Outside the school environment he has been involved in adult education and, more extensively, in the commercial and banking sectors providing IT Training at corporate level. Ric was recently the lead tutor for mathematics in the Skills for Life project at the Sheffield College.

Ric is passionate about education.

"My philosophy is that we need to be teachers of people first not just teachers of subjects; we need to understand how people learn and from that why learners all too easily fail."

This understanding can only be gained through experience, by being interested in people, by learning about cognitive development and comprehending the processes of thinking, language development and learning. These elements underpin and direct the professional approach to teaching.

The learner also brings with them a richness of experience. In maths it is essential to link, to embed the concepts and ideas fully in the world of experience.
